Lake Matka – Матка Езеро
This lake is an artificial lake created in 1938 by creating a hydroelectric dam on the Treska River (Треска Река) and filling the Matka Canyon (Матка Кањон). The lake is located just outside of Skopje near the village of Matka. This is the oldest artificial lake in Macedonia and it features some underwater caves. Of significance is the Vrelo Cave (Пештера Врело). At a depth of 192 meters (630 feet), the Vrelo Cave is the deepest underwater cave in the Balkans and one of the deepest in Europe. Time to grab some scuba gear.1
One can enjoy a very nice picturesque walk along the lake and the Treska River. Located within the immediate vicinity of the lake is The Assumption of the Virgin Mary Monastery (Манастир Успение на Пресвета Богородица), the St. Andrew Monastery (Манастир Св. Андреја), and the Shishevski Monastery (Шишевски Манастир).
