Skopje’s Main Public Square – Ploštad (Ploshtad)

There are many sights and experiences to have in Skopje from the Old Bazaar (Stara Čaršija / Stara Charshija) to Museums, the ancient city of Skupi / Scupi to the Skopje Fortress, from river walks to walks up Mount Vodno, and palate pleasing gastronomical fare from Balkan grill to national cuisine and a large choice of international restaurants. Any visitor to Skopje will undoubtedly find themselves at Ploštad (Ploshtad).


Ploštad (Ploshtad), is a public square, known as the Macedonia Square is at the center of Skopje adjacent to the Gradski Trgovski Centar (GTC) and next to the Vardar River where the old Stone Bridge leads to the Old Bazaar. New monuments began being put in place in 2010 and across the river, buildings such as Archaeological museum were completed in 2012-13. Many festivals such as VinoFest and the Christmas festival are held here.


Skopje, the capital city of the Republic of Macedonia, the birthplace of Mother Teresa has existed for millennia. Now it is a modern city burgeoning with new growth with ten municipalities. According to the last official census in 2002, Skopje had a little over 500,000 residents. Recent unofficial estimates place the population around 650,000 to 700,000.
