Štip – St. Michael

St. Michael – Holy Archangel Michael – Sveti Arxangel Mihail – Свети Архангел Михаил  in Štip (Штип)

This church dedicated to St. Michael, built in 1332, is on the road leading to the Isar Fortress overlooking the town of Štip.  There are no frescoes really remaining inside but the architecture remains impressive.  We even discovered some marble columns lying in the church yard.  The pictures in the gallery below are in the order that they were taken, beginning with the approach to the church.

The church is a cruciform (cross) shaped from bricks and mortar.  There is evidence that this church was painted with frescoes but during the Ottoman Empire the church was turned into a Mosque and the frescoes were destroyed.1
