Vevčani (Vevchani)

Vevchani, Вевчани (Vevčani)

The small town of Vevchani is located on the foothills of Mount Jablanica in southwestern Macedonia about 13 kilometers (17 minute drive) north of Struga and 14 kilometers north of Lake Ohrid. The origin of the name of the village evolves from the old Slavonic word “Ves” meaning “village”.  Thus, “Vevčani” means people of the village.1 The ancient Roman road, “Via Ignatia” that connected the eastern provices to the rest of the Roman Empire passed through this very village.  In 2002, in effort to attract more visitors and tourists, the village of Vevčani declared itself an independent republic and even created its own currency, the “Vevčani Ličnik” to be used as a souvenir.  The village is famous for the Vevchani Carnival (Вевчани Карнивал), an annual tradition for over 1400 years that attracts travelers from all over the world.
