The Village of Gradešnica – Градешница (Gradeshnitsa)
The village of Gradešnica (Gradeshnitsa), located in the Mariovo region in southwestern Macedonia is about 55 kilometers east of Bitola and at the Gradeshka canyon and river. At the entrance to the village you will find the 15th century church dedicated to St. Demetrius (Sv Demetrija) shown in pictures 3 to 7 in the gallery below. At the time of our visit, entrance into the church compound was not permitted due to the ongoing renovation project.
In the heart of Gradešnica (Gradeshnitsa) just a few steps from the zadruga (general store) there is another church dedicated to St. Nicholas (Sv Nikola).
The village of Gradešnica is one of the handful of villages in the Mariovo region that features remarkable stone architecture such as Zovik, Staravina and Rapeš (Rapesh). According to page 55 of the Macedonia Census in 2002, this village had 49 households and 89 inhabitants1.
